The Tech Nation evidence threshold is not a published score. The rules set a minimum: one mandatory and two optional criteria, at least 2 documents each, and 10 documents at most. Beyond that, an independent panel judges whether your evidence is strong enough overall.

This guide is for applicants who ask, "Do I have enough?" It separates what the rules say from what nobody can promise, and it gives you a way to test your own evidence.

Key takeaways

  • No official pass mark or points total exists for the Global Talent Visa.
  • The written minimum is 1 mandatory plus 2 optional criteria, with at least 2 documents each.
  • Meeting the minimum is necessary, but the panel decides overall.
  • Quality beats quantity, so strong evidence is independent, impactful, recent and specific.
  • Be careful with guides that quote exact numbers, because we found none in the official guidance.
  • A self-audit before you apply shows where your case is thin.

What Is the Tech Nation Evidence Threshold?

The Tech Nation evidence threshold is the level of proof that persuades the panel to endorse you, and Tech Nation does not publish a number for it. The rules give structure, but they do not give a score.

According to the gov.uk digital technology page, Tech Nation reviews your application as the endorsing body. That page does not say that a set number of documents or achievements guarantees success. There is also no points system for this visa.

Why people look for a number

Applicants want certainty, and a number feels like certainty. Some third-party guides quote salary bands, audience sizes or user counts. We could not find those figures in the official pages we read, so we do not repeat them as rules.

If you see a hard number, ask where it comes from. A guide may describe one case or one author's view, and that is not the same as a rule.

What Do the Rules Actually Say About the Minimum?

The written minimum is one mandatory criterion plus two optional criteria, with at least 2 documents for each, and no more than 10 documents in total. The gov.uk guidance on documents sets out these limits.

RuleWhat it says
Mandatory criterionRecognition as a leading or emerging talent in digital technology
Optional criteriaAny 2 of 4: innovation, recognition outside the day job, contribution to a product-led business, academic contributions
Documents per criterionAt least 2
Total evidence documentsUp to 10
LengthUp to 3 A4 sides per document
ReuseOne document cannot count for two criteria
Letters3, from experts who have known your work for 12 months or more

What the minimum adds up to

Two documents for the mandatory criterion and four for two optional criteria make 6. That is the lowest number that meets the written rules. The remaining 4 slots let you strengthen the criteria where your proof is thinner.

Our criteria guide explains each criterion in full, so we only summarise them here.

Is Meeting the Tech Nation Evidence Threshold Minimum Enough?

No. Meeting the minimum is necessary, but it is not sufficient, because the independent panel judges your application overall. Two documents per criterion can still fall short if the panel finds them weak.

This is why the question "how many?" misleads. The panel does not count boxes. It reads what you submit and decides whether it shows leadership or emerging leadership in digital technology.

The written rules vs the unwritten bar (Tech Nation Evidence Threshold: How Much Evidence Is Enough? (The Honest Answer))
Tech Nation evidence threshold: The rules versus the unwritten bar.

Why panel discretion matters

Panel discretion means people judge your evidence, not a formula. Two applicants can submit the same number of documents and get different outcomes.

A law firm that writes about the route reports that assessors sometimes accept evidence as credible yet find it not sufficient. Treat that as one practitioner's view, not official guidance.

For you, this means two things. First, you cannot treat any count as safe. Second, you should make each document easy to judge, which means clear and checkable.

Quality Versus Quantity in the Tech Nation Evidence Threshold

Tech Nation's guidance puts quality ahead of quantity and lists the problems that weaken applications. It names vague or generic letters, outdated evidence, documents that do not relate to digital technology and claims that nobody can verify. It also lists work whose impact stays inside one organisation.

All of these are quality problems. None of them is fixed by adding more documents. In fact, you only have 10 slots, so each weak item crowds out a strong one.

What this means in practice

Ten padded documents will likely score worse than six strong ones plus a few well-chosen extras. The rules let you submit up to 10, but they do not ask you to fill every slot.

What Does "Enough" Look Like in Practice?

In practice, enough evidence is independent, shows real impact, is recent and is specific. These four tests are our own way of reading Tech Nation's quality warnings, not an official scoring scheme. Use them to judge each document.

Test 1: Independence

Independent evidence comes from outside your employer. Tech Nation's guidance says evidence for recognition must come from outside the company, and it says internal awards do not count. A news article about your product is stronger than an internal email praising it.

Test 2: Impact

Impact means a result, not just an activity. "I led the migration" describes activity. "The migration cut load times and raised sign-ups, as shown in this report" describes impact. Tech Nation's guidance also warns about work whose effect stays inside one organisation, so show reach where you can.

Test 3: Recency

Evidence should fall within the last 5 years. The mandatory criterion also asks for recognition in that period. An old award may add background, but it should not carry a criterion.

Test 4: Specificity

Specific evidence names numbers, dates, products and people. It lets a stranger see what happened without asking you. Vague praise, such as "outstanding contributor", gives the panel nothing to check.

What We Know and What Nobody Outside the Panel Knows

Some parts of the process are public, while others are not. Separating the two helps you plan without guessing.

What we knowWhat is not published
An independent panel decides overallAny score or weighting for each criterion
You need 1 mandatory and 2 optional criteriaHow many strong documents tips a decision
At least 2 documents per criterion, 10 in totalWhether one strong item can offset a weaker one
Tech Nation cannot review documents before you submitHow much each type of evidence counts

What this means for your planning

Because the weighting is not public, a safe plan aims for strength everywhere you can. Do not build your case on one star document and leave the rest thin. Instead, make every slot do real work.

It also means you should ignore claims of insider knowledge. Nobody outside the panel can tell you the exact bar, and we do not claim to.

Do Salary, Job Titles and Big Employers Meet the Bar?

None of these meets the bar on its own, because Tech Nation's guidance looks for impact and recognition, not status. We found no official rule that a salary, a title or a famous employer satisfies a criterion.

A senior title tells the panel your rank. It does not tell the panel what you built or who noticed. The same goes for a well-known employer, since the panel assesses you, not the company.

How to use status as context

Use titles and salary as background that supports a stronger document. For example, an employer letter that confirms your scope and results adds context to a press article. On its own, the title adds little.

Illustrative Example (Fictional): Same Count, Different Strength

Two fictional applicants show why the count tells you little. Both submit 8 documents and both meet the written minimum.

Illustrative example (fictional): Lena works at a product-led software company. Her 8 documents include two independent press articles, a conference talk with a public recording, a patent record, a customer case study with usage figures, an audited revenue summary and two others of similar quality.

Tom works at a similar company. His 8 documents include a company newsletter, an internal award, a personal blog post, two screenshots without context and a letter that praises him in general terms. Only one item comes from outside his employer.

What the example shows

Both applicants meet the numeric minimum, but only Lena's set gives the panel something to verify. Tom's set meets the rules on paper and still looks thin. That gap is the heart of the threshold question.

Table: Weak and Strong Versions of the Same Evidence

The same achievement can look weak or strong depending on how you present it. This table shows pairs for a fictional applicant. Use it as a pattern, not a template.

ClaimWeak versionStronger version
Led a product launchInternal email thanking the teamTrade press article naming the product and the applicant's role

How Do Recommendation Letters Affect the Threshold?

Letters raise the quality of your case, but they cannot replace evidence. The rules require 3 letters from established experts who have known your work for at least 12 months. Letters alone are not enough.

Tech Nation's guidance names vague or generic letters as a problem. A strong letter gives different, specific examples and ties them to your documents. Our guide to recommendation letters explains how to brief referees.

A simple letter test

Read each letter and ask, "Could this be about anyone in my job?" If the answer is yes, ask the referee to add dates, results and examples.

Self-Audit: Test Your Tech Nation Evidence Threshold

A self-audit shows you where your evidence is thin before the panel sees it. Run it on each criterion you plan to claim. The checklist below is our own tool, not an official one.

Criterion-level checks

  • I have at least 2 documents for the mandatory criterion
  • I have at least 2 documents for each optional criterion I claim
  • No document is used for more than one criterion
  • Each document fits within 3 A4 sides

Document-level checks

  • At least one document per criterion comes from outside my employer
  • Each document shows a result, not only a task
  • Everything falls within the last 5 years
  • Each document names numbers, dates, products or people
  • A stranger could check each claim without my help
  • I wrote and prepared each document myself, with no templates or AI-generated text

How to read your results

If you answer no to several document-level checks, you probably need stronger proof, not more of it. If you answer yes to nearly all, your set is well built. That still does not guarantee an outcome, but it removes the avoidable weaknesses.

Illustrative Example (Fictional): Running the Self-Audit

Here is how a fictional applicant could use the checklist. It shows the process, not a prediction.

Illustrative example (fictional): Nia is a backend engineer at a product-led fintech company. She plans to claim the mandatory criterion plus innovation and contribution to a product-led business.

She lists 8 documents and runs the checks. Both mandatory documents are independent and recent. Innovation has one strong item and one internal slide deck. Contribution has two items, but both come from her employer.

Self-audit: test each document (Tech Nation Evidence Threshold: How Much Evidence Is Enough? (The Honest Answer))
Tech Nation evidence threshold: Your evidence self-audit.

What Nia does next

Nia sees two gaps. Innovation needs a second independent item, and contribution needs one outside source. She asks a customer for a short written case study and looks for an outside write-up of her feature.

She sets a target date and delays her application until the gaps close. That is only an example, and a different applicant might decide differently.

How to Strengthen a Thin Criterion

You can strengthen a thin criterion by adding independence, specificity or reach to what you already have. Start with the weakest criterion and work upwards.

  1. Find the claim that the criterion needs you to prove.
  2. List every item you have that supports it.
  3. Mark each item as independent or internal.
  4. Replace internal items with outside proof where you can.
  5. Add dates, figures and your own role to each document.

Where outside proof comes from

Outside proof can come from customers, event organisers, journalists, open source users and peers. Ask early, because outside parties work on their own timelines. In practice, a few weeks of asking can lift a whole criterion.

What If You Are Not Sure You Have Enough?

If you are not sure, you can build more proof before applying or you can apply and use the review route if needed. The key factor in the decision is time, since the endorsement takes 5 to 8 weeks and a refusal costs you months.

An endorsement review is free if you ask within 28 days of a refusal, but you cannot add new evidence. A fresh application is possible too, with a new fee. At the time of writing, the endorsement fee is £561.

Why waiting can be the better choice

Applicants in this situation often wait when one criterion has only one strong document. They use the extra months to speak at an event, publish verifiable work or collect a customer result. Others apply sooner because their set is already strong.

Neither choice is right for everyone. Want the guide for your role? See the guides.

Does the Evidence Threshold Differ for Talent and Promise?

Tech Nation uses the same structure for both routes, but the story your evidence tells differs. Exceptional Talent is for established leaders, and Exceptional Promise is for emerging leaders. We found no published split in the number of documents between the two.

In practice, an established leader usually needs evidence that shows sustained impact over several years. An emerging leader needs evidence that shows strong early signals, such as adoption of their work or recognition from respected people. Our guide to Exceptional Talent vs Exceptional Promise explains the choice in more detail.

Why a mismatch can hurt

If your evidence reads as early-stage but you claim the established route, the panel may see a gap between your claim and your proof. The reverse can happen too. So match the route to what your documents really show.

How Much Time Should You Allow?

Allow enough time to build strong proof, because the panel cannot be hurried and your evidence cannot be rushed. Endorsement itself usually takes 5 to 8 weeks. Building a good set often takes longer than that.

Many applicants work in three phases. First, they audit what they have. Next, they close gaps with outside proof. Finally, they prepare and check each document. Once the endorsement comes through, you have 3 months to make the visa application, so plan that window too.

Common Mistakes About Evidence Thresholds

Most threshold mistakes come from treating the rules as a target. Applicant communities report these patterns, so treat them as applicant-reported rather than official.

  • Stopping at the minimum of 6 without checking quality
  • Filling all 10 slots with weak material
  • Trusting a guide that quotes an exact bar
  • Counting internal praise as recognition
  • Using the same strong item for two criteria
  • Relying on letters to carry a thin evidence set

Our list of Tech Nation endorsement mistakes goes into more detail.

A better question to ask

Instead of asking "How much is enough?", ask "What would make each claim easy to believe?" That question moves you from counting to quality. It also pushes you to find outside proof, add dates and show your own part.

If you can answer it for every document, your set is in good shape. If you cannot, that document is the one to fix, replace or cut before you apply.

Tech Nation Evidence Threshold FAQ

Is there a minimum score for the Tech Nation evidence threshold?

No published score exists. The Global Talent Visa has no points system. The written minimum is one mandatory and two optional criteria, with at least 2 documents each. Tech Nation's independent panel then decides overall whether your evidence is strong enough.

How many documents do I need to meet the threshold?

The rules need at least 6 documents if you claim the mandatory criterion and two optional ones. You can submit up to 10. More is not always better, because one weak document can take a slot that a stronger one could fill.

Can I be refused if I meet every criterion?

Yes. Meeting the criteria is necessary but not sufficient. The panel judges your application overall, so weak, vague or hard-to-verify evidence can lead to a refusal even when each criterion has the minimum number of documents.

Does a high salary meet the evidence threshold?

We found no official rule that a salary meets any criterion on its own. Tech Nation's guidance asks for evidence of leadership and impact in digital technology. Applicants in this situation often use salary only as supporting context, not as the main proof.

What should I do if Tech Nation refuses my endorsement?

You can request a free endorsement review within 28 days, though you cannot add new evidence. You can also make a fresh application with a new fee. Many applicants first compare their refusal reasons with their documents.

How We Checked This Article

We read the gov.uk page on documents you need for the digital technology endorsement, which sets the limits on documents and pages.

We also read the main gov.uk digital technology page and the main Global Talent page, plus Tech Nation's what to consider guidance for the quality warnings. Our search for an official numeric pass mark found none. Some law firm and applicant guides quote numbers or describe how assessors behave, and we treat those as unofficial views.
