This Global Talent Visa cost breakdown covers seven costs: the endorsement fee, the visa fee, the health surcharge, dependant fees, optional extras, adviser costs and the settlement fee. At the time of writing, the two application fees total GBP 766 before the surcharge.
The surcharge is the largest item, and it grows with every year of visa. This guide is for applicants and families who want a full budget before they start. For a shorter overview, see our benefits and costs page.
Key takeaways
- The main applicant pays GBP 561 for endorsement and GBP 205 for the visa, so GBP 766 before the surcharge.
- The Immigration Health Surcharge is usually GBP 1,035 per adult for each year of visa, paid up front.
- Partners and children pay their own visa fee and surcharge. They do not pay an endorsement fee.
- Optional extras, such as faster decisions, translations and adviser help, are not included in the official fees.
- Settlement carries its own fee later, so budget for it from the start.
What Does the Global Talent Visa Cost in Total?
The visa costs more than the headline GBP 766, because the health surcharge, optional extras and settlement come on top. For a single applicant on a five-year grant, the official fees reach roughly GBP 5,941 before settlement.
Think of the cost in two layers. The first layer is the official fees that every applicant pays. The second layer is the extras that depend on your choices and circumstances.
All figures here are at the time of writing, and fees change. Always check gov.uk before you pay. Note the date of each fee you check, because gov.uk updates them from time to time.

Global Talent Visa Cost Breakdown, Part 1: The Endorsement Fee
The endorsement fee is GBP 561, and the main applicant pays it when applying to Tech Nation. Gov.uk lists it as the first part of the GBP 766 total.
The fee is not refundable, so it is gone whether the result is positive or not. A fresh application after a refusal means a new fee. For that reason, many applicants spend extra time on their evidence first. Our criteria guide shows what the panel looks for.
What the fee does not include
The fee pays for the assessment only. It does not cover document preparation, certified copies, translations or any help from an adviser.
Dependants do not pay this fee. Only the person seeking endorsement does.
Review rather than reapply
Gov.uk allows a free endorsement review if you request it within 28 days of a refusal. You cannot add new evidence to a review. Otherwise a fresh application costs a new fee.
Global Talent Visa Cost Breakdown, Part 2: The Visa Application Fee
The visa fee is GBP 205 for a main applicant who has an endorsement. You pay it when you apply to the Home Office, after the endorsement is in hand.
Together, the endorsement and visa fees make the GBP 766 that gov.uk quotes. Applicants with an eligible prize skip the endorsement and pay the full amount at the visa stage.
Timing of payments
You pay in two moments. The endorsement fee goes first, and the visa fee plus surcharge follow. Because the visa application must come within three months of your endorsement, plan the second payment before you receive the first result.
For example, a fictional applicant pays GBP 561 in January and receives her endorsement in March. She then has to find GBP 205 plus a surcharge of several thousand pounds within a few weeks. Her savings plan assumed a later date, and she had to borrow for a short time.
Applying from inside or outside the UK
The fee figure is the same either way. The difference is the decision time, which is usually 3 weeks from outside the UK and 8 weeks from inside it. A longer wait can still affect your cash flow, so plan your savings around the slower date.
Global Talent Visa Cost Breakdown, Part 3: The Immigration Health Surcharge
The surcharge is usually GBP 1,035 per adult for each year of visa, and GBP 776 per year for under-18s. You pay it up front for the whole visa, so it is often the biggest single payment.
The gov.uk surcharge page explains how part years are calculated. In short, the amount depends on the length of visa you are granted, not on how long you plan to stay.
How the visa length changes the bill
A longer grant means a larger surcharge. At the adult rate, three years costs GBP 3,105 and five years costs GBP 5,175.
You cannot always choose the length. Gov.uk says the initial visa lasts up to 5 years, so check the grant length on your decision. Our guide on the two endorsement routes explains why settlement timing differs between them.
What the surcharge buys
Paying the surcharge lets you use the NHS from the date your visa starts, on much the same terms as a resident. Prescriptions, dental care and eye tests may still cost extra.
Illustrative example (fictional)
A fictional developer is granted a five-year visa. The surcharge is 5 x GBP 1,035 = GBP 5,175. His application fees are GBP 766. His official total is therefore GBP 5,941, and the surcharge makes up about 87% of it.
Global Talent Visa Cost Breakdown, Part 4: Dependant Costs
Partners and children each pay their own visa fee and surcharge, but no endorsement fee. Gov.uk says that for each person applying you pay the application fee plus the healthcare surcharge.
This is the stage where a single budget turns into a family budget. The gov.uk partner and children page lists who qualifies and how they apply.
Who counts as a dependant
A partner can be a husband, wife, civil partner or unmarried partner. Children generally need to be under 18 and live with you, with some exceptions. Check the page for the full rules.
Where costs creep in
Dependants need documents. A marriage or birth certificate may need a certified translation, and passports may need renewal before you apply. These costs sit outside the official fees.
Also, a child's surcharge uses the lower rate, but it still adds up over five years. Gov.uk says biometric appointments for dependants carry no extra fee.
Global Talent Visa Cost Breakdown: Worked Tables
These tables show how the fees add up in two cases. They are illustrative, they assume a five-year grant, and your real total will differ. Confirm each figure on gov.uk.
Illustrative example (fictional): single applicant
| Item | Amount (GBP) |
|---|---|
| Endorsement fee | 561 |
| Visa fee | 205 |
| Surcharge, 5 years at 1,035 | 5,175 |
| Official total | 5,941 |
Illustrative example (fictional): applicant, partner and one child
This case uses gov.uk's current visa fee for each dependant, which gov.uk lists at GBP 766 per person. It assumes the child is under 18.
| Item | Amount (GBP) |
|---|---|
| Main applicant: endorsement, visa and surcharge | 5,941 |
| Partner: visa fee 766 plus surcharge 5,175 | 5,941 |
| Child: visa fee 766 plus surcharge 5 x 776 = 3,880 | 4,646 |
| Official total | 16,528 |

What the tables leave out
The totals exclude optional extras, adviser costs, travel, housing and settlement. They also assume everyone is granted five years.
If the grant is shorter, the surcharge falls with it. If anyone's fee changes before you apply, the total changes too.
Cost 5: Optional Extras That Add Up
Optional extras are the costs that no official page forces on you, yet many applicants pay at least one. Budget for them separately so they do not surprise you.
- Faster decisions. Gov.uk lists faster decisions for an extra fee. Adviser pages quote figures in the hundreds or low thousands of pounds, so check the current price on gov.uk.
- Translations and certified copies. Documents not in English usually need a certified translation. Prices depend on the provider and the length.
- TB test. Some applicants need a tuberculosis test, depending on where they have lived. Gov.uk lists the countries and the approved clinics.
- Passport renewal. A passport with too little validity can cost you time as well as money.
- Appointment extras. Visa application centres may offer paid options. The standard appointment does not need them.
Cost 6: Adviser, Guide and Evidence Costs
Adviser and guide costs are optional, and they range from a free self-assessment to a full legal service. No rule says you must pay for help.
Law firms publish their own fees, which reach thousands of pounds for a full service. We do not quote a typical figure because it varies by provider and case. Compare scope, not only price.
Where our guides fit
Our role-specific endorsement guides give you an evidence checklist and planner, so you can build the application yourself. Start at the guides hub to see the options. We do not state a price here, because pages change.
Evidence costs people forget
Some evidence costs money to produce. Examples include a conference ticket, a hosting bill for a project or a professional membership. Applicants in this situation often record these early, so they can decide what to keep.
Cost 7: The Settlement Fee
Settlement, or indefinite leave to remain, carries a separate fee, and it applies to each person who settles. Immigration law publications report it as GBP 3,226 per applicant for applications from 8 April, up from GBP 3,029, after the annual fee change.
We could not open this figure on a gov.uk fee table, so treat it as reported and confirm it before you plan around it. The Free Movement fee update sets out the change.
When settlement can happen
Gov.uk says Global Talent holders may settle after 3 or 5 years, depending on field and route. Talent endorsements lead to the 3-year point, and Promise endorsements to the 5-year point.
Other settlement costs
Some applicants need to pass the Life in the UK test, which costs GBP 50 at the time of writing. Gov.uk lists exemptions, such as for those under 18 or 65 and over.
Extensions before settlement
If you extend instead of settling, gov.uk lists the same GBP 766 application fee, plus the surcharge, for each extension. Longer visas therefore save on repeat fees.
When Does Each Global Talent Visa Cost Fall Due?
Costs fall due in four moments over several years: endorsement, visa, any extension and settlement. Mapping them to dates helps you avoid a cash squeeze.
| Moment | What you pay | Who pays |
|---|---|---|
| Before you apply | Documents, translations, optional help | Everyone |
| Endorsement application | GBP 561 | Main applicant |
| Visa application | Visa fee and surcharge | Every applicant |
| Extension, if needed | Visa fee and surcharge again | Every applicant |
| Settlement | Settlement fee, possibly a test fee | Each person settling |
Why the second payment matters most
The visa stage is the biggest single outlay, because the surcharge is paid for the whole grant at once. Most applicants have months to prepare for the endorsement fee, but only a short window for the second payment.
For that reason, applicants often save the visa-stage money before they pay the endorsement fee. If the endorsement is refused, the savings stay in your account.
Paying by card
Large payments sometimes hit card limits or bank fraud checks. Ask your bank to raise your limit in advance, and keep a second payment method ready. A failed payment on the last day of a window is a stressful way to lose time.
Is the Global Talent Visa Cost Worth It?
Whether the cost is worth it depends on your goals, and nobody can answer that for you. What we can do is describe what the fees pay for, so you compare like with like.
Gov.uk says the route needs no job offer, so you do not need an employer to pay a sponsorship cost for you. It also lets you work, study and settle after 3 or 5 years, depending on your route. Our benefits and costs page covers those points briefly.
Questions to ask yourself
Ask yourself whether your evidence is ready, whether you can fund the second payment and whether your family plans match the visa length. Then consider the cost of a refusal, since a second application means a second endorsement fee.
Illustrative example (fictional)
A fictional couple compares two plans. In plan A they apply this month with thin evidence and risk a second fee. In plan B they spend eight more weeks strengthening the file and apply later. Plan B delays the move, but it may lower the chance of paying twice. Neither plan guarantees an outcome.
A Budget Checklist You Can Copy
A short checklist turns this guide into a plan, and it takes about twenty minutes to complete. Work through it once, then update it when gov.uk changes a fee.
- Write down every person who will apply, with their age and passport expiry date.
- Note the visa length you expect, and calculate the surcharge for each person.
- Add the endorsement fee for the main applicant only.
- Add each visa fee, using the current figure from gov.uk.
- List the documents that need translation or certified copies.
- Add a line for optional extras, even if the amount is zero today.
- Add a line for settlement later, per person.
- Set aside a buffer of at least one month's living costs for delays.
Keeping the numbers honest
Record the date you checked each fee and the page you used. Fees change, so a note such as "checked on 3 March, gov.uk" saves you from using an old figure later.
If your total looks higher than you expected, do not trim the surcharge or skip a dependant. Instead, look at timing. Spreading the work over a few months often helps more than cutting an item.
Illustrative example (fictional)
A fictional designer finds that her family total is GBP 16,528 before extras. She cannot find that sum within three months, so she spends the next two months saving and strengthening her evidence. Her plan is slower, but it matches her cash flow. Applicants in this situation often make the same trade.
How Costs Surprise People
Most surprises come from timing, family size and add-ons, not from the fee list itself. Here are five common ones.
- The surcharge arrives all at once. It covers the whole visa and is paid at the visa application.
- The three-month window forces fast payment. The visa fee and surcharge fall due soon after endorsement.
- Dependants multiply the bill. Each person pays a visa fee and surcharge.
- A refusal restarts the clock. A fresh endorsement application costs another GBP 561.
- Settlement is a separate budget line. It comes years later, and it is per person.
See our mistakes guide for errors that lead to a refusal and a second fee.
Illustrative example (fictional)
A fictional couple budgets GBP 766 each and assumes that covers it. They then learn that the surcharge is per year and per person. Their real bill is many times higher than they planned, so they delay the application by two months to save.
How to Plan and Reduce Your Costs
You cannot change the official fees, but you can control timing, evidence quality and extras. Applicants in this situation often use a simple five-step plan.
- List every person who will apply and their ages.
- Calculate the surcharge for each person using the gov.uk figures.
- Add certificates, translations and passport costs.
- Build a cash buffer for the second payment after endorsement.
- Spend time on the evidence first, since a refusal is the most costly surprise.
Comparing with other UK routes
We have not compared costs with other UK routes here. Fee tables change often and the routes work differently, so we only compare what we can verify on gov.uk at the same date.
Global Talent Visa Cost Breakdown FAQ
At the time of writing, the main applicant pays GBP 561 for endorsement and GBP 205 for the visa, so GBP 766. The Immigration Health Surcharge comes on top, usually GBP 1,035 per adult for each year of visa. Dependants pay their own visa fee and surcharge.
No. Only the main applicant pays the endorsement fee. Partners and children pay their own visa fee and surcharge when they apply, as gov.uk describes. Check the current dependant page for their exact fees and for who qualifies.
Gov.uk has a refunds section for the surcharge, so a refund may be possible in some cases, such as a refused visa. Check the current refund rules before you rely on one. The endorsement fee is not refundable.
Nothing on gov.uk requires an employer to pay, and the visa needs no sponsor. Some employers choose to help, but that is a private agreement. Keep your own records of what was paid and by whom.
Immigration law publications report the settlement fee as GBP 3,226 per applicant for applications from the 8 April fee change. Some applicants also pay GBP 50 for the Life in the UK test. Confirm both figures on gov.uk before you plan around them.

How We Checked This Article
We checked the endorsement, visa and surcharge amounts, the dependant rules and the extension fee on the gov.uk pages for the Global Talent route and the health surcharge. We checked the Life in the UK test fee on its own gov.uk page.
Next, we compared our figures with several published cost guides from advisers and universities. The settlement fee did not open on a gov.uk fee table for us. Instead, we cite two published immigration law updates and mark the figure as reported.
