A Global Talent Visa rejection means one of two different bodies said no: Tech Nation refused your endorsement, or the Home Office refused your visa. Each one has its own next step, deadline and cost, so work out which it was before you do anything else.

This guide is for applicants who have just read a refusal email and feel stuck. It gives you seven steps, a decision table and a fictional example.

Key takeaways

  • Check which body refused you first. An endorsement refusal comes from Tech Nation. A visa refusal comes from the Home Office.
  • An endorsement review is free, must be requested within 28 days, and cannot include new evidence.
  • A new endorsement application is allowed, but you pay the fee again.
  • A visa refusal has a different route, usually administrative review, with its own short deadline and fee.
  • Read the refusal reasons line by line before you choose. The reasons decide the route.
  • Do not rush a reapplication that repeats the same evidence. Fix the gap first.

Two Kinds of Global Talent Visa Rejection

There are two kinds of Global Talent Visa rejection, and they come from different decision makers. Mixing them up is the most common early mistake.

The route has two stages. First, Tech Nation decides whether to endorse you. Then, if you hold an endorsement, the Home Office decides the visa. You can read the official outline on the gov.uk Global Talent digital technology page.

Endorsement refusal (Tech Nation)

An endorsement refusal means Tech Nation's panel decided your evidence did not show enough. Applicants report that this is the more common problem in this route. The decision usually arrives 5 to 8 weeks after you apply, at the time of writing.

Your email comes from the endorsing body. It usually says that you did not meet the mandatory criterion, one of the optional criteria, or both.

Visa refusal (Home Office)

A visa refusal comes after you already hold an endorsement. The Home Office checks things like identity, your endorsement, and general suitability. The reasons at this stage look quite different from an endorsement refusal.

For example, a refusal might cite a missing document, an expired endorsement, or a suitability issue. Because the decision maker is different, the remedy is different as well.

Why the difference matters

The review for an endorsement refusal is free. An administrative review for a visa refusal costs money and follows other rules. If you file the wrong one, you can lose your window.

The First 48 Hours After a Global Talent Visa Rejection

In the first 48 hours, do three things: save everything, read slowly, and write down your deadline. Do not reply, reapply or pay anything yet.

Panic leads to quick, expensive decisions. A calm day or two costs you almost nothing, since you have 28 days for an endorsement review.

Save and date everything

Download the decision email and any attachments. Then save your original application, your evidence list and your payment receipts in one folder.

Next, note the date you received the decision. The gov.uk guidance counts your review window from the day you get the decision, so write down that date.

Work out which body refused you

Check the sender and the wording. An email about "endorsement" from the endorsing body is a Tech Nation decision. A letter about your "visa application" from UK Visas and Immigration is a Home Office decision.

If you are unsure, the decision notice normally says which kind of decision it is. If it does not, treat the earliest deadline as the real one.

Check your leave and travel plans

If your current UK permission is about to expire, note this. The gov.uk page is clear that asking for an endorsement review will not extend your stay. So your immigration status needs its own plan.

Read the Refusal Reasons Before You Choose

You should read the refusal reasons before choosing any route, because the reasons tell you whether you have a problem of judgement or a problem of evidence.

Tech Nation's refusal normally sets out which criteria it did not accept and why. Take a highlighter, or copy each reason into a table with three columns: the reason, the evidence you submitted, and what is missing.

Reasons that point to a review

A review checks whether your evidence was weighed correctly. So it fits when the refusal seems to misread something you did provide. For instance, the decision says you gave no evidence of a product, but your documents clearly show one.

In that case the gap is in the judgement, not in the evidence. A review can look at this.

Reasons that point to a new application

Other reasons are about weak or missing evidence. Examples include recognition that came only from your own employer, a company that did not look product-led, or letters that repeated each other.

A review cannot fix these. You cannot add anything new, so the same evidence would meet the same answer. Applicants in this position often rebuild their evidence and apply again.

A simple three-column check

Write each reason in the first column. Then, in column two, list the exact document you think answers it. If the column is empty, you likely have an evidence gap. If you can point to a document, you may have a judgement issue.

The common Tech Nation endorsement mistakes page helps you spot patterns in your own reasons.

Global Talent Visa Rejection Option 1: Endorsement Review

An endorsement review is a free second look at the same application, and you must request it within 28 days of getting your decision.

The gov.uk guidance says you can ask for a review if you do not think your endorsement application was judged correctly. The endorsing body carries it out. There is no fee.

What a review can and cannot do

The review looks at whether your evidence was properly considered and whether anyone made a processing error. However, you cannot give new evidence. That is the key limit.

So a review works best when the problem is how your evidence was read. It works poorly when the problem is that the evidence is thin.

How long it takes

According to gov.uk, you are told by email within 28 days whether your review has been successful. The request itself goes on the Global Talent endorsement review form, which you email to the address the guidance gives.

If the review fails

If you are refused again for the same reasons, you cannot ask for another review. You would pay the fee again for a new application. If you are refused for new reasons, you get a letter and may ask for a further review on those new points only.

You can read all of this on the official endorsement refusal and review page. For a fuller walk-through, see our guide on the Global Talent Visa endorsement review.

Global Talent Visa Rejection Option 2: Reapply

A new application is a fresh start with fresh evidence, and you pay the endorsement fee again, which is £561 at the time of writing.

This route fits when the refusal shows a real evidence gap. You are free to submit different documents, switch which criteria you rely on, or move between Exceptional Talent and Exceptional Promise.

What to change before you reapply

Start with the three-column table from the last section. Every empty cell is a task. Then ask three questions:

  1. Is each document from outside my employer where the criterion needs outside recognition?
  2. Does each document sit under only one criterion, with at least two per criterion?
  3. Do my three recommendation letters come from established experts who know my work well?

If you cannot answer yes to all three, wait and fix them first. The recommendation letters guide explains what strong letters look like.

Review first, or reapply straight away?

Some applicants do both in order. They request a review inside the 28 days. Meanwhile, they build their new evidence. If the review fails, they are ready to reapply.

This is a common approach, not a rule. The review has no fee, so it costs you only time. Check gov.uk for whether your own situation allows it.

How long to wait

There is no official waiting period for a new endorsement application in the pages we checked. However, a rushed second attempt with the same evidence often meets the same outcome. Take the time the evidence needs.

Global Talent Visa Rejection Option 3: Challenge a Visa Refusal

If the Home Office refused your visa, the usual route is an administrative review, and your decision letter tells you whether you can ask for one.

Administrative review is a check on whether a caseworker made an error. The gov.uk guidance says it considers whether the decision is wrong because of a casework error and corrects it if so. It does not usually take new evidence.

Deadlines and fees

For someone outside the UK who applied outside the UK, you must ask within 28 days. The fee is £80. The gov.uk page warns that results can take 12 months or more.

Shorter windows apply to refusals made inside the UK, according to the wider guidance: 14 calendar days, or 7 if you are detained. Check the exact deadline in your letter, because it is easy to miss.

A trap to avoid

The gov.uk page says your review request is withdrawn if you make any other immigration or visa application. So a quick new application can cancel your review. Think about which route you want before you file anything else.

Is a fresh visa application better?

Sometimes. If the refusal was about a missing document and your endorsement is still valid, a new visa application may be faster than waiting for a review. Remember the visa must be applied for within 3 months of the endorsement.

Read the official administrative review page and your own letter before you decide.

Review, Reapply or Appeal? A Decision Table

The table below matches common situations to the route that usually fits, so you can see the logic at a glance.

Treat the table as a map, not advice. Each case differs, and your decision letter is the real guide.

Where the word "appeal" fits

Many people search for an "appeal", but the gov.uk pages for this route talk about reviews. For an endorsement refusal, the official remedy is an endorsement review. For a visa refusal, it is administrative review. Check your letter for any other right.

Illustrative Example (Fictional)

This is a made-up case to show how the thinking works. It is not a real person and not a prediction.

Imagine "Sam", a backend engineer. Sam applies for Exceptional Talent and receives a refusal on optional criterion 3. The decision says there was no evidence of a significant technical contribution to a product-led business.

Step by step

Sam reads the reasons and builds the three-column table. Sam finds that two documents did show contributions, but both came from the employer and the decision says the evidence was not independent.

Looking closer, the three letters use almost the same wording. Neither problem is a misreading, and both are evidence gaps. A review could not add new documents, so Sam sees a likely repeat refusal.

What Sam does

Sam decides to rebuild. Over several weeks, Sam gathers an independent source describing the product impact, replaces two weak documents, and asks three referees for distinct letters. Then Sam reapplies and pays the fee again.

In a second version of the story, the decision says "no product evidence" while a document clearly shows a shipped product. There, a review would be the natural first step. Applicants in this situation often choose this path.

What Not to Do After a Global Talent Visa Rejection

The worst moves after a refusal are quick ones: reapplying unchanged, missing a deadline, or paying someone to promise a result.

Do not resubmit the same file

If you send the same documents, expect the same answer. Change something real, or do not apply yet.

Do not miss the 28 days

You cannot get the free review back once the window closes. Even if you plan to reapply, note the date so the choice remains open.

Do not add new evidence to a review

The review does not accept it, and your request may simply be judged on the original file. Keep new documents for a new application.

Do not trust guarantees

Nobody can guarantee an endorsement. Be careful with anyone who promises a reversal or quotes a success rate. Tech Nation's panel decides overall, and meeting the criteria is necessary but not sufficient.

Do not rely on forum rumours

Applicants report patterns in refusals on community forums, and these can help you think. However, they are not official guidance. Always check gov.uk and Tech Nation's own pages.

Handling the Emotional Side of a Refusal

A refusal hurts, and it is normal to feel angry or deflated for a few days before you plan.

Applicants often report being refused the first time because their evidence did not match the criteria. A refusal says your file did not persuade this panel. It does not measure your career.

Give yourself a short pause, then return to the table. Talk to a referee or colleague who knows your work. Their view can show you what your evidence left out.

What the Weeks After a Refusal Can Look Like

A realistic plan usually runs over several weeks, and the 28-day review window sets the first milestone.

Week one

Save your files, read the reasons and build the three-column table. Decide whether you will request a review. If you will, collect the review form and draft your points now, because a rushed form is a weak form.

Weeks two to four

Send the review request well before day 28. While you wait, start sorting new evidence in case you need it. For example, ask a possible independent source whether they can describe your work in a short document.

The review decision then arrives by email within 28 days of your request, according to gov.uk. Keep your plan flexible until it does.

After the review result

If the review succeeds, you move on to the visa stage and must apply within 3 months of the endorsement. If it fails, you already hold a head start on a new application. Then you choose your timing based on how strong the new file is, not on how fast you want to move.

How to Write a Strong Review Request

A strong review request is short, specific and tied to the refusal reasons, and it points to documents you already submitted.

Quote each reason, then show where your original file answers it. Name the document and the page. Explain plainly why you believe the reason misread it. Skip emotion and skip new claims.

If a point needs new evidence to work, leave it out. The reviewer cannot use it, and it can distract from your strongest argument. Our earlier checklist of common gaps shows which problems reviews cannot fix.

Your Global Talent Visa Rejection Checklist

Use this checklist in order. Each step takes you closer to a clear choice.

  1. Save the decision, your application and your receipts in one folder.
  2. Confirm who refused you: Tech Nation or the Home Office.
  3. Write down the decision date and every deadline.
  4. Read each refusal reason and fill in the three-column table.
  5. Decide whether the gap is judgement or evidence.
  6. Choose review, new application, or visa remedy.
  7. Act inside the deadline, and change something real if you reapply.

Where to build stronger evidence

If you plan to reapply, a role-specific guide can save time. Our software developers guide and data and AI specialists guide show how to map evidence to each criterion. You can also compare your options in the criteria overview.

Global Talent Visa Rejection FAQ

Can I reapply after a Global Talent Visa rejection?

Yes. After an endorsement refusal you can make a new application, and you pay the fee again. A reapplication works best when you change the evidence that caused the refusal. If you are refused for the same reasons after a review, you cannot ask for a second review.

How long do I have to request an endorsement review?

You must request an endorsement review within 28 days after you get the decision. The gov.uk guidance says it is free, and you are told by email within 28 days whether it succeeded. Requesting a review does not extend any UK permission that is about to expire.

Can I add new evidence to a review?

No. The gov.uk guidance says you cannot give new evidence as part of an endorsement review. The review checks whether your existing evidence was judged correctly or whether there was a processing error. New evidence belongs in a new application.

What if the Home Office refused my visa, not my endorsement?

That is a different decision with a different remedy. Your decision letter says whether administrative review is available. Outside the UK the request is due within 28 days and costs £80, according to gov.uk. A fresh visa application may suit some cases.

Does a refusal stop me applying again in future?

Not for an ordinary evidence-based endorsement refusal, as far as the gov.uk pages we checked show. Applicants often return with stronger evidence. Different rules can apply where a refusal involves deception, so read your letter carefully and take legal advice if it does.

Your Next Step

Start by deciding which kind of refusal you have, then match the route to the reasons. If your evidence has gaps, a clear plan helps more than a fast second attempt. Our role-specific endorsement guides include an evidence checklist and planner for each specialisation.

How We Checked This Article

We checked the rules in this article against official pages. We read the gov.uk Global Talent digital technology page, its endorsement refusal and review page, its application page, the gov.uk administrative review page, and the Home Office administrative review guidance. Competitor articles helped us find the gaps.

The Home Office administrative review guidance gives the in-country deadlines we mention. Fees and timings are correct at the time of writing, so confirm them before you act.
